ARTS
Evanston boasts one of the largest and most diverse arts communities in the state. The arts are celebrated often, and there are abundant opportunities to get involved in the arts here in Evanston...
Arts Week Evanston, held every October, celebrates the local cultural arts community by staging special performances and activities that highlight the various visual and performing arts disciplines.

The City of Evanston's Cultural Arts Division staff manages two of the City's most popularsummer festivals: the Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival and the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, as well as the free Starlight Concert Series held at various parks every summer. Several summer arts camps for youth and teens are held at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center and at local schools.
Each year the Mayor's Award for the Arts are announced. The latest winners were John Szostek and The Musical Offering (recognized for service in 2007). In addition, the Evanston Arts Council’s Arts & Business Committee named Whole Foods Market in Evanston the first recipient of its annual Leadership Award.
Evanston received the 2007 Presidents' Arts Friendly Community Award presented by the Illinois Arts Alliance in collaboration with the Illinois Municipal League. On October 19, 2007, City Manager Julia A. Carroll accepted the award on behalf of the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton, Mayor of Evanston. The purpose of this award is to highlight and promote municipal support of the arts in Illinois communities and to honor municipal leaders who have encouraged innovative approaches to using the arts to build healthy communities. The award showcases programs and projects that may be viewed as models or best practices for other communities.
All nominations are judged on the following criteria: nominations demonstrate ongoing commitment to the arts on the part of the municipal government; arts activities meet a clearly defined community need and produce tangible results; presence of broad and diverse community support for nominated activities; and demonstrated innovation and creativity in their approach to integrating the arts with overall municipal strategies.
The City of Evanston's Cultural Arts Division also provides opportunities for people to participate in cultural arts activities throughout the community. Staff in this division manages
the Noyes Cultural ArtsCenter which serves the community by providing low cost studio, rehearsal, office and performance space to Evanston and area professional artists and arts organizations.
